Herstmonceux Castle

Herstmonceux Castle is a 15th-century moated brick castle located near the village of Herstmonceux in East Sussex, England. It is one of the better-preserved brick-built medieval castles in the region.

The castle complex includes the central moated keep and large domestic ranges where guided tours show restored rooms and period architecture. Surrounding formal gardens and parkland provide riverside walks and views across the Weald.

A visitor attraction on site is the science and astronomy centre that occupies part of the castle estate, offering exhibitions and public events in the historic buildings.

The castle was built in the 15th century as a fortified manor and remained a private residence for centuries. In the mid 20th century the Royal Observatory, traditionally associated with Greenwich, was relocated to the site and the grounds later developed for educational and public uses.

The castle sits in rural East Sussex within the Wealden landscape, close to the village of Herstmonceux and accessible by local roads from the surrounding towns of Sussex.
