Heroes' Square

Heroes’ Square (Hősök tere) is a major ceremonial square in Budapest dominated by the Millennium Monument, a large colonnade and statues commemorating Hungary’s leaders. It marks the western end of Andrássy Avenue and forms a focal point for national ceremonies.

The square’s principal feature is the Millennium Monument, whose central column is approximately 36 meters tall and is flanked by a semicircular colonnade with statues of historic Hungarian figures. The Museum of Fine Arts and the Hall of Art (Műcsarnok) stand on either side of the square.

The monument ensemble was created for the 1896 millennial celebrations marking 1000 years since the Magyar settlement of the Carpathian Basin. The square has since been a site for civic events and public commemorations.

Located at the entrance to City Park (Városliget), the square is a short public-transport ride from central Budapest and anchors a major axis of avenues, museums and parkland.

• Transport access: The square sits at the end of Andrássy Avenue and is served directly by the M1 metro line at the Hősök tere station, making it easy to reach from central Budapest.
