Herat Citadel
Castle Massive citadel in Herat, centuries-old fortress complex
Herat’s Citadel (Qala Ikhtyaruddin) occupies a central city hill with restored fortifications and a small museum; tourists pair fortress tours with visits to the Friday Mosque and nearby bazaars.
The Herat Citadel, often called Qala Ikhtyaruddin, is a fortified stronghold occupying a prominent mound in the historic heart of Herat city. The citadel dominates the surrounding old city and has been a focal point of Herat’s urban fabric for centuries.
The site includes thick mudbrick and masonry walls, interior courtyards, restored gate structures and sections of rampart that visitors can walk. A small museum inside the citadel displays archaeological finds and material related to the building’s history and conservation.
The fortification has been occupied and rebuilt by successive local rulers over many centuries, with phases dating to medieval and later periods; it has repeatedly been repaired and altered to suit changing defensive needs. Significant conservation and restoration work was carried out in the early 21st century to stabilise and conserve the structure.
The citadel sits centrally within Herat city in western Afghanistan, adjacent to the old bazaar and historic quarters. It stands on a raised site that makes it a clear landmark within the urban landscape.
