Heraclea Minoa

Heraclea Minoa is the archaeological remains of an ancient Greek city on a coastal promontory of southern Sicily, located at the mouth of the River Platani. The site preserves visible traces of an acropolis, defensive walls, a theatre and necropolis dating to the Archaic and Classical periods.

Excavated areas reveal city planning and public architecture typical of Greek colonial sites in Sicily, including domestic quarters and funerary areas. The theatre and acropolis remain among the most visible features for visitors.

The settlement was founded in the Archaic period, with material evidence of Greek and later Roman occupation, and it played a role in regional coastal networks in antiquity. Over centuries the site changed hands and functions in response to regional political shifts.

Heraclea Minoa occupies a headland on Sicily’s southern coast between the provinces of Agrigento and Agrigento’s coastal plain, accessible from local roads and situated within a largely rural coastal landscape.
