Hengsteysee Lake

Hengsteysee is an artificial reservoir on the Ruhr River in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, created by a dam and weir system. It functions as a managed water body within the Ruhr valley landscape and is a regional recreational resource.

The reservoir was created in the 20th century as part of river regulation, flood control and hydropower/navigation improvements on the Ruhr. Its role has been both functional for river management and recreational for surrounding communities.

Hengsteysee lies on the Ruhr between the towns of Hagen and Herdecke in the eastern Ruhr area, within commuting distance of larger cities such as Dortmund and Hagen.

By car it is about 15-25 km from Dortmund city centre (roughly a 20-35 minute drive depending on route and traffic), accessible via local roads off the A1/A45 corridor; parking and lakeside access points are on the local municipal roads around the reservoir. It can also be reached by regional rail to Hagen or Herdecke followed by a short local bus or taxi ride to the lakeshore.

• Visit early on weekdays or late afternoons to avoid weekend crowds of windsurfers and day-trippers that gather around Hengsteysee's main recreation areas.
• Access the lake from the RuhrtalRadweg (Ruhr Valley cycle route)-the path runs along the shore and gives several low-traffic viewpoints where you can watch wind- and paddle-sports activity without needing to find parking.
• Head to the western end near the dam for the clearest panorama of the reservoir and the spillway; that area tends to be quieter than the main picnic and sailing spots and is good for photography at golden hour.
