Helvellyn
Mountain Lake District mountain, famous Striding Edge ridge walk
A classic Lake District summit, Helvellyn attracts walkers for routes such as Striding Edge, full‑day ridge hikes and summit panoramas over Ullswater and surrounding fells.
Helvellyn is a mountain in the English Lake District with a summit at 950 metres, prominent in the Helvellyn range and well known for its dramatic ridges.
The mountain’s principal features are the narrow arêtes Striding Edge and Swirral Edge and the summit plateau, which together provide classic ridge-and-summit routes popular with walkers and scramblers. The south side drops into Red Tarn, a glacial corrie tarn beneath Striding Edge.
Helvellyn has been a popular destination since the 18th and 19th centuries and remains one of the Lake District’s most frequented peaks due to its routes, views and accessibility from valleys such as Glenridding and Thirlmere.
It stands in the Eastern Lake District, overlooking valleys and lakes to the north and west and reachable from local villages including Glenridding.
- Elevation: Summit elevation is 950 metres above sea level, making it one of England's highest peaks and the highest in the Helvellyn range.
- Safety: Striding Edge is exposed and can be hazardous in poor weather or winter conditions; proper equipment and experience are required for icy or windy conditions.
What to See #
- Striding Edge: Striding Edge is a sharp arête on the eastern approach to the summit that requires exposed scrambling along a narrow knife-edge and is one of the most famous ridge walks in the Lake District.
- Swirral Edge: Swirral Edge is a second, less exposed ridge on the western side of the summit used as an alternative route for ascent and descent.
- Red Tarn: Red Tarn lies to the south of the summit below Striding Edge and is a common route reference for ascents from Glenridding.
