Hells Gate is a narrow, rocky constriction of the Fraser River in British Columbia’s Fraser Canyon near the communities of Boston Bar and Lytton. It is a well-known natural landmark on one of Canada’s major salmon rivers.

The gorge has long been a key feature for Indigenous peoples and later for European river navigation and resource use. Over the 19th and 20th centuries the site attracted attention for its effects on salmon migration and for transport and infrastructure that followed the Fraser Canyon.

The gorge sits in the Fraser Canyon of south-central British Columbia, roughly between the towns of Boston Bar and Lytton along the Fraser River, within the steep, forested terrain of the Coast Mountains’ eastern slopes.

  • Airtram: A suspended cable car crosses the river and provides panoramic views of the gorge from both sides.
  • River choke point: Steep, fast-flowing water funnels through a narrow bedrock constriction, making the site significant for river navigation and salmon passage.
