Helgafell (Vestmannaeyjabær)

Helgafell is a small volcanic cone on the island of Heimaey in the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands) archipelago off the south coast of Iceland. It is a prominent local landmark on Heimaey and is commonly visited on short hikes from the island settlement.

A well-marked path leads from the village toward the summit, offering panoramic views over Heimaey, the harbour and neighboring sea stacks. The climb is brief but involves loose volcanic rock underfoot, so most visits are short outings rather than long treks.

Helgafell is part of the volcanic landscape that defines Heimaey and the wider Vestmannaeyjar group. The island also contains younger volcanic features such as Eldfell, which erupted in 1973 and reshaped parts of Heimaey.

The cone sits on Heimaey island within the municipality of Vestmannaeyjar, directly off Iceland’s south coast. The island contains the town often called Vestmannaeyjar or Heimaey, and Helgafell is readily reached on foot from that settlement.
