Main image

Helagsfjället is a mountain massif in Jämtland County in the Swedish Scandes, known for alpine terrain and glaciated features. It lies within a network of trails used for hiking and ski touring.

The area offers marked trails, mountain huts and routes to the summit and glacier; terrain includes rocky ridges and high plateaus typical of the region. The glacier on Helags is a notable attraction and a destination for guided walks.

The massif has been used for traditional mountain pasture and modern recreational use by hikers and skiers; mountain stations and huts developed to support visitors have made ascents and glacier visits accessible. Scientific interest in the glacier has grown with contemporary climate study.

Helagsfjället sits in western Jämtland County in central Sweden, within the Scandinavian Mountains and reachable from mountain villages and trailheads in nearby valleys.

  • Glacier: Contains Sweden's southernmost glacier, which is a key natural feature of the massif and a focus for summer hikes and spring ski tours.

What to See #

  • Helags glacier: A small glacier located on the mountain, notable for being the southernmost glacier in Sweden and a focal point for scientific study and guided walks.
  • Helags fjällstation: A mountain station serving hikers and skiers, offering accommodation and a base for ascents of the massif during summer and winter seasons.

Tips for Visiting Helagsfjället #

  • Aim for mid-summer (late June-August) for largely snow-free trails and the mountain station's services - outside that window glacier travel and deep snow make routes much harder.
  • Base a summit attempt out of STF Helags fjällstation (the staffed mountain station) rather than starting from the road; it's the usual staging point and also arranges guided glacier walks.
  • Don't underestimate the Helags glacier: if you plan to cross or approach the glacier, join a guided trip or bring proper glacier gear - crevasse rescue and roped travel skills are required for safe glacier travel.
