Heian Palace
Palace Site of Heian-era imperial palace in Kyoto
The Heian Palace site marks Kyoto’s Heian‑period imperial compound; visitors come for the nearby Heian Shrine, seasonal gardens and the chance to read layers of Kyoto’s urban history dating to the 8th-12th centuries.
The Heian Palace was the imperial palace complex laid out when Japan’s capital moved to Heian-kyō (modern Kyoto) in 794, serving as the seat of court and government in the early Heian period. The palace precinct formed the ceremonial and administrative heart of the capital.
Today the original palace survives primarily as an archaeological footprint and parkland; nearby is the Heian Shrine, a large modern Shinto complex built in 1895 that reproduces Heian-period architectural forms and includes extensive gardens. Visitors typically see the shrine buildings, landscaped gardens and the archaeological traces of the earlier palace.
The palace complex was established at the end of the 8th century as part of the planned Heian capital and over subsequent centuries the formal palace buildings fell into disuse, with much of the original wood architecture disappearing while the site plan and ceremonial spaces remained part of Kyoto’s urban fabric.
The site lies in eastern central Kyoto, in the Okazaki/Heian area of the city, within walking distance of other cultural sites and museums in eastern Kyoto.
