Heian Jing6b (Heian Shrine) is a Shinto shrine complex in Kyoto built in the late 19th century as a commemorative site for the city’s Heian period origins. The shrine is known for its large torii, expansive gardens and Heian‑era style architecture.
Visitors commonly come to view the shrine architecture, walk the formal gardens and see seasonal displays such as cherry blossoms in spring and irises in early summer. The main shrine buildings are a partial-scale reconstruction inspired by the imperial palace of Heian-kyo.
The shrine was established in 1895 to celebrate the 1100th anniversary of the founding of Heian-kyo (the old capital now known as Kyoto) and has hosted festivals and ceremonies ever since. Its modern construction reflects a late‑19th century effort to memorialise and celebrate Kyoto’s historical capital status.
Heian Shrine sits in the Okazaki district of Kyoto, east of the central city and near other cultural sites and museums; the garden and approach areas provide a relatively open, park‑like setting within the urban fabric.
- Foundation date: Established in 1895 to mark the 1100th anniversary of the founding of Heian-kyo, the shrine buildings are modeled after Heian period imperial architecture.
- Best times to visit: Cherry blossom season and the shrine's seasonal festivals draw the largest crowds; early morning or weekday visits reduce congestion.
What to See #
- Heian Shrine Garden: A large formal garden created at the same time as the shrine that features traditional Japanese plantings and is particularly noted for spring cherry blossoms and early-summer iris displays.
- Great torii gate: The front approach is marked by a very large shallow-topped torii gate that frames the view toward the shrine buildings and is a common photo spot for visitors.
