Hearst Tower (Manhattan)

Hearst Tower in Manhattan is a mixed-use office building that pairs a 1928 limestone base with a modern glass-and-steel tower addition designed by Norman Foster. The tower portion was completed in 2006 and serves as headquarters space for the Hearst Corporation.

Visitors and passersby encounter a distinctive diagrid pattern on the tower’s facade and a ground-level atrium open to the public. Office floors rise above the historic base; the project is often noted for combining preservation of the original building with a contemporary vertical addition.

The site began with the street-level building constructed in 1928 to house Hearst’s magazine operations; the new tower was added decades later to provide expanded office space and modern systems. The combination preserved the original exterior while adding a new high-rise volume.

The building occupies a Midtown Manhattan block on West 57th Street near Columbus Circle, within the dense midtown business and cultural district.
