Hayne's Cave Battery
Historical Site Former coastal artillery battery in Gibraltar's cliffside
Hayne’s Cave Battery is a former coastal artillery position on the Rock of Gibraltar. It forms part of the extensive network of batteries, tunnels and defensive works that were constructed on the Rock during British rule.
Remains include gun emplacements and associated access tunnels that are part of Gibraltar’s military archaeology. The site is one element among many batteries and cave emplacements that defended the approaches to the territory.
The battery was one component of Gibraltar’s layered coastal defences and was operated by British military units while the fortifications were active. Over time most such positions were decommissioned as coastal artillery became obsolete.
Situated on the Rock of Gibraltar, the battery is within the British Overseas Territory at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula.
