Hateruma is the southernmost inhabited island of Japan, part of the Yaeyama group in Okinawa Prefecture. The island is known for traditional Ryukyuan culture, coral-fringed beaches and clear night skies.
Small villages, low-rise traditional houses and stretches of white sand beaches are typical features, along with shallow coral reefs used for snorkeling. A stone marker on the island denotes Japan’s southernmost inhabited point and is a common photo spot.
The island was historically part of the Ryukyu Kingdom and later incorporated into modern Japan; local culture retains Ryukyuan language and customs. Fishing and small-scale agriculture have long supported the island community.
Hateruma lies in the southern Yaeyama Islands of Okinawa Prefecture in the East China Sea, administratively part of Taketomi town. The closest larger island and transport hub is Ishigaki.
- Southernmost inhabited point: Marked by a stone monument denoting the southernmost inhabited point of Japan and valued locally for very low light pollution, making it a popular site for stargazing.
