Hastings Castle
Castle Norman-era cliff-top castle ruins overlooking Hastings
Perched above the east Sussex shoreline, Hastings Castle offers Norman-era ruins and sea views. Visitors explore the medieval remains, interpretive panels and walkways that overlook the town and English Channel.
Hastings Castle is a ruined Norman castle sited on East Hill above Hastings Old Town in East Sussex, England. It was constructed soon after the Norman Conquest to secure the coastline and control the surrounding area.
Surviving elements include sections of the keep, curtain walls and foundations, with interpretive displays in a visitor centre that explain the castle’s medieval role and the archaeological evidence recovered on site. The ruins offer coastal views over the English Channel and the town below.
The castle suffered progressive damage from coastal erosion and cliff instability, with significant collapses occurring in the 18th and 19th centuries that removed parts of the original structure. Today the site is presented as a ruin with protective measures and visitor interpretation.
Hastings Castle sits above Hastings Old Town on the Sussex coast in southern England and is reachable on foot from the town centre; the location provides views of the seafront and surrounding coastline.
- History and erosion: Built soon after the 1066 Norman Conquest, the castle was subject to cliff erosion and partial collapse during the 19th century, which destroyed some medieval structures.
