Harvard Yard is the historic heart of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, serving as a central green and cluster of the university’s oldest buildings since the colonial era. One key fact is that the Yard contains several of Harvard’s oldest surviving structures and formal open spaces.

The central open lawns and walkways that are bounded by lecture halls, libraries and dormitories, and the well known bronze statue of John Harvard, a frequent photographic landmark. The Yard’s ensemble of historic buildings and greens provides the visible core of the campus and a primary arrival point for many visitors.

Harvard Yard developed as the university’s academic and residential center over the 17th and 18th centuries, with major buildings from the colonial period through later expansions. Several early university buildings survive within the Yard and remain in use for administration and student housing.
