Harvard Square

Harvard Square is a public square and surrounding commercial district in Cambridge, Massachusetts, immediately adjacent to Harvard University’s main campus. It is a long-established civic and transit hub serving students, residents and visitors.

The area includes a dense concentration of shops, bookstores, cafes and performance spaces, with the MBTA Red Line station at the square providing frequent subway service. Street-level attractions include specialty bookstores, music venues and regular street performers; Brattle Street and Massachusetts Avenue are principal thoroughfares.

Named for Harvard University, which was founded in 1636, the square grew as a commercial and cultural center closely tied to university life and the surrounding intellectual community. Over the 19th and 20th centuries it developed into a focal point for transport, retail and public gatherings.

Harvard Square sits in central Cambridge, roughly 3 kilometers northwest of downtown Boston, centered on the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Brattle Street and immediately north of Harvard Yard.

• Transit hub: Serves as a major transit node on the MBTA Red Line with an underground station at the square and multiple bus routes that converge here.
• John Harvard statue: Bronze statue by Daniel Chester French, installed in 1884, sits in nearby Harvard Yard and is a common photo spot for visitors to the area.
