Tweed weaving developed as a distinctive local industry in the 19th and 20th centuries and remains an important cultural and commercial product.

You can reach Harris by road from Stornoway (on Lewis) via the A859; the main ferry port/road hub on Harris is Tarbert. Tips for Visiting Harris, Outer Hebrides #

  • Plan visits to beaches such as Luskentyre and Scarista for early morning or late afternoon light-these times give the famous turquoise-to-gold contrasts with far fewer people than midday.
  • Factor in single-track roads and passing places when driving around Harris: allow extra time, use designated car parks at main beaches and pull into passing places to let locals through.
  • Avoid summer midge swarms by checking recent local reports and timing coastal walks for windy periods; if you want quieter spots, explore east-coast bays and small village beaches rather than the main west-coast draws.
  • Book inter-island ferries and popular activities (boat trips, guided hillwalks) in advance during July-August, but visit in late spring or early autumn for milder weather and far fewer visitors.
