Harpoot

Harpoot, often spelled Harput and located near modern Elazığ in eastern Turkey, is a historic hilltop settlement centered on a fortified ridge. The site is known for its castle, layered historic buildings, and its role as a regional center in successive empires.

The fortress dominates the ridge and the surrounding old town contains a mix of historic houses, mosques, and cemetery sites reflecting a long sequence of occupation. Harput served as a local administrative and military center at different times and retains visible medieval and later-period fabric despite later population shifts toward the modern city of Elazığ.

Archaeological and architectural evidence shows continuous habitation from antiquity through medieval and Ottoman periods, though many historic buildings have been altered or repurposed. The settlement’s hilltop position provides views across the surrounding plain and helped define its strategic importance.

Geographically it sits on a limestone ridge a short distance from the center of Elazığ in Elazığ Province, eastern Anatolia.
