Harpers Ferry National Historical Park protects the historic town of Harpers Ferry and surrounding landscape at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers in West Virginia. The park interprets the town’s industrial, transportation and military history from the 18th and 19th centuries, including the site of John Brown’s 1859 raid.
Key features include the restored Lower Town historic district, John Brown’s Fort, riverfront viewpoints and interpretive exhibits about the Civil War and early American industry. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail crosses the park and Harpers Ferry is an important access and resupply point for hikers.
The area saw repeated military activity during the Civil War and later preservation efforts established the town and its industrial remains as a place for historic interpretation. The park continues to manage both the built historic resources and surrounding natural areas.
