Han Yang Ling
Monument Western Han imperial mausoleum with terracotta burials
Outside Xi’an, the Han Yang Ling tomb complex displays Western Han burial pits, thousands of small terracotta figurines and an on-site museum. Visitors come for archaeology, intact funerary artifacts and an accessible look at Han dynasty burial practices.
Han Yang Ling is the Western Han imperial mausoleum complex near Xi’an in Shaanxi province, built for a Western Han dynasty emperor and his consort. It is known for its underground burial complex and archaeological displays that interpret funerary practices of the Han period.
Exhibits include conserved burial chambers and display areas where pottery figures, models and funerary objects are presented in situ behind protective walkways and glazing. The museum arrangement emphasizes archaeological context and daily-life models rather than the large-scale terracotta armies of Qin.
The mausoleum complex dates to the Western Han dynasty and was constructed as an imperial burial site for the emperor and members of his household; subsequent centuries left the mound and subterranean features buried until modern archaeological excavation. Excavation and museumisation have focused on conserving the burial pits and interpreting Han funerary culture.
The site lies in Shaanxi province close to the Xi’an metropolitan area, within the region that served as the political and cultural heartland of early imperial China. It is accessed from Xi’an and nearby transport links serving the province.
