Hamoukar

Hamoukar is an archaeological site in northeastern Syria, in al-Hasakah Governorate, notable for evidence of early urban settlement in the late Neolithic to early Bronze Age. The tell and surrounding remains comprise occupation layers from roughly the 5th to the 3rd millennia BCE.

Excavations have revealed dense architectural remains, craft debris and fortification elements indicative of a large, organised settlement for the period. The stratified deposits at the main mound preserve material culture important to understanding early urban processes in northern Mesopotamia.

The site was an important regional centre in prehistory and shows phases of growth, craft production and eventual destruction and abandonment during the Bronze Age transitions. Its archaeological record has contributed to debates about the timing and nature of early urbanisation in the Near East.

Hamoukar is located in the Khabur river region of northeastern Syria, within al-Hasakah Governorate, in a landscape of cultivated plains and seasonal watercourses.
