Hammershus
Ruins Largest medieval castle ruin in Northern Europe
On Bornholm’s north coast, Hammershus presents extensive medieval fortress ruins overlooking the Baltic. Visitors come for ramparts and towers, coastal hiking trails, sea views and on-site exhibitions about the site’s military history.
Hammershus is a medieval castle ruin on the northern tip of the Danish island of Bornholm, dating to the 13th century and frequently described as the largest medieval fortress in northern Europe. The ruins occupy a rocky headland and are a prominent regional landmark.
Visitors can explore extensive ruined curtain walls, towers and inner courtyards perched on a basalt promontory with open sea views. Interpretive panels and a nearby visitor centre explain the site’s military architecture and regional importance, and paths lead around the headland for coastal vistas.
Construction began in the 13th century as an episcopal and noble stronghold; control passed between church and crown during the medieval period. The fortress saw sieges and use as a power base and prison before falling into disuse and becoming a protected ruin in later centuries.
The site occupies a rocky promontory on the northern coast of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, close to the towns of Allinge and Gudhjem. It is reached by road and short walks from the island’s main coastal routes.
- Visitor centre and access: A visitor centre near the site provides maps, an exhibition about the fortress and marked walking paths onto the promontory.
What to See #
- North Tower (keep): Largest surviving tower within the ruin, offering views over the fortress and the Baltic Sea from its elevated position on the promontory.
- Curtain walls and gate: Remnants of the castle curtain walls, gate passages and defensive earthworks that define the outer extent of the medieval complex.
- Chapel and domestic ruins: Ruined chapel area and adjacent domestic foundations that indicate the religious and administrative functions of the site during the Middle Ages.
How to Get to Hammershus #
Hammershus is on the northern shore of Bornholm island. From Rønne (Bornholm’s main town), drive or take bus 6 north towards Allinge-Sandvig; the castle is a short taxi or 20-30 minute bus+walk from Allinge. Ferries to Bornholm run from Ystad (Sweden) or Køge/Kopenhagen (seasonal); from Ystad the ferry to Rønne takes about 3 hours.
Tips for Visiting Hammershus #
- Approach from the north parking lot (P4) to avoid the steepest climb; follow the wooden signposts.
- Bring windproof clothing - the castle sits exposed on a cliff and the wind off the Baltic bites even on sunny days.
- Check guided-tour times at the Bornholm Museum (seasonal) to get inside the reconstructed interpretation panels and cellars.
- Climb the western tower for the cleanest sightlines; the eastern ramparts are better for photographs at golden hour.
Best Time to Visit Hammershus #
Best visited between late spring and early autumn for ferry connections and on-site interpretation; off-season offers raw weather and near-solitude.
