The Hamgyong Mountains are a mountain range in northeastern Korea, primarily within North Hamgyong Province of North Korea. They form a major relief feature of the northeastern Korean Peninsula.
The range consists of steep, rugged terrain with numerous peaks and valleys; it is significant for its elevation relative to surrounding lowlands. Natural features include forested slopes and river valleys draining toward the coast.
The mountains have long formed a natural barrier and influenced settlement and transport patterns in the region. They have also been a borderland feature in historical interactions on the northeastern peninsula.
The range runs through North Hamgyong Province in northeastern North Korea, nearer to the Sea of Japan (East Sea) than to the interior of the peninsula.
