Häme Castle

Häme Castle (Finnish: Hämeen linna) is a medieval stone castle in the town of Hämeenlinna in southern Finland, with origins in the late 13th century. It is one of Finland’s most important surviving medieval fortifications and today functions as a museum and cultural site.

The castle preserves a curtain of stone walls, towers and a central courtyard that visitors can walk through, with exhibits explaining medieval construction and regional history. Interior rooms contain museum displays, and seasonal events and guided tours are commonly available for visitors. The site provides close-up views of medieval architecture and the castle’s defensive layout.

Construction began in the late 1200s as a fortress to control inland routes in what was then the Swedish realm. Over centuries the castle served military and administrative roles, later being adapted for use as a prison before undergoing restoration and conversion into a museum in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The castle stands in central Hämeenlinna in the Kanta-Häme region of southern Finland, adjacent to Lake Vanajavesi. It is easily reached from the town center and lies roughly 100 kilometers north of Helsinki by road.
