Hamama
Ruins Coastal locality in southern Israel's Negev region
Hamama refers to a historical village in the southern coastal plain of what is now Israel; it was a Palestinian Arab village prior to 1948. The site is known in historical records as part of the populated coastal settlements of the southern plain.
The location was primarily an agricultural village with buildings and cultivated land serving the local population; historical accounts document its existence in Ottoman and British Mandate-era sources. The village was depopulated during the 1948 conflict and ceased to function as a Palestinian village thereafter.
After 1948 the area containing the former village was incorporated into the state of Israel and changed in land use and settlement patterns; remnants of village structures are recorded in historical studies.
Hamama is located on the southern coastal plain in the region now administered as Israel’s Southern District, in the coastal area north of the present-day Gaza Strip.
