Hall Island (Arctic)

Hall Island is an uninhabited island in the Franz Josef Land archipelago, administered as part of Arkhangelsk Oblast in the Russian high Arctic at about 80.31°N. It is a remote polar landform notable for its high-latitude location rather than for built features.

The island is largely ice-covered and rocky, with typical polar environments of pack ice, seasonal sea ice and coastal wildlife such as seabirds and seals. Human visits are very infrequent and normally associated with scientific expeditions or specialised cruises.

Charting and naming of islands in the Franz Josef Land area took place during the era of 19th and early 20th century Arctic exploration; Hall Island has had no permanent population and has been administered as part of Russian Arctic territories. It has remained essentially unchanged in use and character since it was first recorded by explorers.

Hall Island lies within the Franz Josef Land group in the Arctic Ocean, well north of the Russian mainland. It is hundreds of kilometres from the nearest permanently inhabited mainland settlements and is reached only by sea or occasional helicopter from other Arctic outposts.

• Access and facilities: Access is by specialised Arctic expedition vessel or research ship; there are no visitor facilities or permanent settlements on the island.
