Halifax Island is a small rocky island off Namibia’s southern Atlantic coast in the ǁKharas Region, situated close to the coastal town of Lüderitz. It is noted for its dense breeding colonies of seabirds.

The island supports species typical of Namibian coastal islands, with large concentrations of cormorants, terns and African penguins recorded there; it is an important local site for seabird breeding and roosting. Boat-based wildlife viewing from Lüderitz is the usual way visitors observe the island.

Humans have long used offshore islands in this region for guano collection and as bases for fisheries and later conservation efforts; Halifax Island is managed in the context of coastal wildlife protection measures.

The island sits a short distance offshore from Lüderitz on Namibia’s southern Atlantic seaboard, surrounded by cold Benguela-current waters and the arid coastal landscape of the ǁKharas Region.

  • Wildlife: Supports breeding colonies of seabirds including African penguins and several cormorant and tern species.
  • Access: Accessible only by boat from the nearby town of Lüderitz; visits are typically short guided or charter trips focused on wildlife viewing.

How to Get to Halifax Island #

The usual access point is Lüderitz (about 12-20 km by sea); local boat operators run wildlife trips that include passages past Halifax Island. Operators depart from Lüderitz harbour - arrange the crossing in advance and check weather reports, since the Atlantic swell can make the trip rough.

Tips for Visiting Halifax Island #

  • Book a licensed boat from Lüderitz rather than improvising - sea conditions can change quickly.
  • Bring binoculars and a telephoto lens; the island's bird colonies can be observed from the boat without setting foot onshore.
  • Respect wildlife: Halifax Island hosts breeding seabirds and African penguins; landings are typically restricted to protect colonies.
