Halabiye

Halabiye is an archaeological site on the right bank of the Euphrates River in Deir ez-Zor Governorate, Syria, preserving the remains of a Roman-Byzantine frontier town and fortress. The site contains visible city walls, towers and urban remains clustered on a strategic river bend.

Visitors to the ruins encounter sections of masonry, defensive works and the footprint of an organized urban centre that functioned as a military and administrative post in antiquity. The arrangement of walls and towers reflects efforts to control river traffic and defend the frontier.

Historical sources and archaeological evidence indicate significant rebuilding and fortification during the Byzantine period, including works attributed to the reign of Emperor Justinian in the 6th century AD. Over subsequent centuries the site experienced phases of occupation, modification and eventual decline.

Halabiye stands on the Euphrates in eastern Syria, in Deir ez-Zor Governorate, occupying a bend in the river that was important for ancient communications and defence; it is reached from regional centres along the Euphrates corridor.
