Hainich National Park

Hainich National Park is a protected area in the German state of Thuringia that preserves large tracts of native beech-dominated woodland. It is noted for its old-growth beech stands and for measures to conserve woodland biodiversity.

Visitors can use an established network of trails that cross mixed deciduous forest, meadows and hedgerows, with signs explaining the ecosystem and species. A raised canopy walkway gives elevated views into the tree crowns and is one of the park’s main visitor attractions.

Designated as a national park to protect the Hainich beech forest, the area has been managed for conservation and public access since it received protected status in the late 20th century. Conservation work focuses on natural processes, deadwood retention and restoring continuous forest cover.

The park covers the Hainich ridge in central Germany’s Thuringia region, forming part of a larger forested landscape between regional river valleys. It is reachable from towns across Thuringia and serves as a significant woodland reserve in central Germany.
