Hainan Island

Hainan Island is the main island of China’s southernmost province, located in the South China Sea. It is a tropical to subtropical island and serves as a major domestic and international holiday destination.

Beaches, resort towns and coastal tourism are the primary visitor draws, with coral-reef dive sites, coastal promenades and luxury hotels concentrated on the southern and eastern shores. The island also contains tropical rainforests and inland scenery that attract nature tourism and outdoor activities.

Hainan was established as a separate province and a special economic zone in 1988, which spurred rapid infrastructure and tourism development. Since then the island has expanded airport, ferry and hotel capacity to support both domestic and international visitors.

Geographically it lies off China’s southern coast across the Qiongzhou Strait from Guangdong Province. Major cities on the island include the northern capital Haikou and the southern resort city Sanya.
