Hafursey

Hafursey is a solitary mountain in southern Iceland, located on the coastal outwash plains near the Mýrdalsjökull glacier. It is a volcanic landform created during subglacial eruptions and stands prominently above the surrounding sands.

The mountain is notable for its stark, often dark appearance against the wide coastal plain and is a recognizable feature for travelers along the southern coast. It does not form part of a larger mountain chain but rises as an individual mass on the plain.

Hafursey was formed by volcanic activity beneath a glacier, which produced its characteristic shape and geology. The area around it is composed of glacial outwash and volcanic sediments, and the mountain’s contours reflect its eruptive origin.

Geographically it lies on the southern coast of Iceland, near the broad outwash plains that extend from the southern glacier edges toward the sea, and is visible from nearby coastal roads.
