Haeinsa Temple Janggyeong Panjeon, the Depositories for the <I>Tripitaka Koreana</I> Woodblocks

Haeinsa Temple Janggyeong Panjeon is the group of traditional storage halls at Haeinsa Temple in North Gyeongsang Province that protect the Tripitaka Koreana woodblocks. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage property notable both for the 13th-century woodblock corpus and for the historic repository architecture.

The complex displays a compact ensemble of wooden depositories set on stone bases with extended eaves and ventilation channels; these architectural details are the main highlight for visitors because they are the features that preserve the woodblocks. The attached exhibition areas present the history and significance of the Tripitaka Koreana and often show facsimiles or interpretive displays.

The Tripitaka Koreana itself was carved between 1236 and 1251 as a complete woodblock edition of the Buddhist canon, totaling 81,258 individual blocks. The Janggyeong Panjeon buildings were designed and altered over later centuries to house and preserve this set, and the site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for the combination of the collection and its purpose-built depositories.

The depositories sit within Haeinsa Temple on Mount Gaya in Gayasan National Park, Hapcheon area of North Gyeongsang Province. The temple complex is reached by road through the national park and is set amid forested slopes.
