Hachijō-kojima
Island Volcanic island in the Izu archipelago, Japan
Small volcanic islet in the Izu archipelago off Hachijō‑jima; accessed by boat, it draws day‑trippers for coastal scenery and short excursions.
A small, uninhabited volcanic islet in the Izu Islands chain administered as part of Tokyo, Japan. The island is characterised by rocky cliffs, volcanic topography and coastal bird and marine habitats rather than visitor infrastructure.
The islet was inhabited in the past but was abandoned in the mid twentieth century; remaining traces of settlement and former cultivation are visible in places. Today it is primarily visited by specialist boat trips and divers rather than regular passenger services.
Landing is infrequent and requires arranging private transport; there are no services or buildings for visitors on the island. Marine and birdlife around the island attract divers and naturalists rather than mass tourism.
Hachijō-kojima lies close to the larger inhabited island of Hachijō-jima in the Izu archipelago and is part of the same municipal administration within Tokyo.
- Access: There is no regular public transport service from inhabited islands; visits normally require a private boat or charter and landing is without facilities.
- Wildlife and facilities: The island hosts seabird colonies and shoreline reef areas that are of interest to divers and wildlife observers, but there are no visitor amenities on the island itself.
