Gytheio City
City in Peloponnese, Greece
Gytheio’s fishing harbor and crescent bay feed tavernas serving grilled octopus; visitors arrive for soft-sand Mavrovouni beach, day trips into Mani’s stone villages and boat connections to Kythera.
Why Visit Gytheio?#
On the Mani peninsula’s coast, Gytheio draws travelers with its faded harbor, seafood tavernas and easy access to sandy Mavrovouni beach. Ancient Gythium’s ruins and neoclassical waterfront buildings give the town historic depth, while local olive oil and squid dishes underline the Peloponnesian culinary profile. Slow-paced evenings and ferry connections make it a peaceful base for exploring southern Laconia, and nearby Mani villages with their tower houses add cultural texture.
