Gurudongmar Lake

Gurudongmar Lake is a high-altitude freshwater lake in North Sikkim, India, located close to the Sino-Indian (Tibetan) border. It is regarded as one of the highest lakes in India and is considered sacred by multiple religious communities.

The lake is visited for its stark high-altitude scenery and religious significance to Sikhs and Buddhists; many visitors view the shoreline and nearby viewpoints rather than undertaking long stays at the water. The landscape is alpine with sparse vegetation and expansive views on clear days.

Local and religious traditions associate the lake with Sikh and Buddhist stories; Sikh tradition holds that Guru Nanak visited and blessed the waters. Over time the site has become a pilgrimage and tourist destination with managed access.

The lake lies in far northern Sikkim, near the border with Tibet, and is accessed by road from towns such as Lachen; travel is typically by organised vehicle due to remote high-altitude routes.
