Gur-e Amir

Gur-e Amir is the mausoleum of the conqueror Timur (Tamerlane) in Samarkand, a compact early 15th century tomb complex known for its turquoise dome and ornate interior tilework. The building served as the dynastic burial chamber for Timur and his close relatives.

Visitors enter a domed funerary chamber decorated with glazed tiles and carved stucco; the central sarcophagus chamber contains the tombs of Timur and members of the Timurid family. The mausoleum’s architectural form and decorative program are notable for their refinement and for their documented influence on later Central and South Asian tomb design.

Completed in the early 1400s, the mausoleum was established as Timur’s dynastic tomb and later became a focus of pilgrimage and historical interest; it has undergone conservation efforts to preserve its decorative tilework and structural form. The building’s plan and dome reflect Timurid funerary architecture of the period.

Gur-e Amir is located in Samarkand near other Timurid monuments and the city’s historical core, within walking distance of the Registan area.
