Gundicha Temple

Gundicha Temple is a Hindu temple in the coastal town of Puri, Odisha, India, closely associated with the annual Jagannath Rath Yatra festival. It functions as the destination shrine where the deities from the main Jagannath Temple are brought during the festival.

The temple complex is visited mainly during the Rath Yatra, when the deities are carried on chariots along a roughly 3 km route called the Bada Danda and remain at Gundicha Temple for nine days before returning. Outside the festival it is a quieter temple complex within Puri’s urban area and is often included on local pilgrimage and heritage routes.

The site has long been part of Puri’s Jagannath devotional landscape and is specifically used as the festival residence of the deities during Rath Yatra. Its ritual role within the Jagannath tradition is the primary reason for its continued significance.

The temple stands in the town of Puri on the coastal plain of Odisha, at the eastern end of the Bada Danda roughly 3 km from the main Jagannath Temple in the city centre.

• Rath Yatra route: The temple lies at the far end of the town's ceremonial Bada Danda; the chariot procession from the Jagannath Temple covers roughly 3 kilometres.
