Gundeshapur

Gundeshapur (Jundishapur) is the site of an ancient Sassanian-era city in Khuzestan province, historically known for a major academy and medical school. It was a notable center of learning in late antiquity and the early medieval period.

Founded and developed during the Sassanian period, the city rose to prominence as a center for medical study and scholarly activity in late antiquity and the early Islamic centuries. Its importance declined after the early medieval period following changes in political control and shifts in scholarly centers.

Gundeshapur lies in southwestern Iran’s Khuzestan province on the alluvial plain at the edge of the Zagros foothills, within the broader historical region that connected Mesopotamia and the Iranian plateau.
