Guaíba is an estuarine water body in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, that forms the western waterfront of the city of Porto Alegre and connects the local river system to the larger Lagoa dos Patos.

The shoreline supports promenades, cultural venues and ferry services; the city waterfront is a primary point for boat traffic, short ferry crossings and riverside recreation. Notable waterfront sites include the former power plant-turned-cultural centre and long public esplanades.

Historically the basin has served as Porto Alegre’s access route to inland waterways and the Atlantic-linked lagoon system; the waterway remains important for transport and urban development.

Guaíba lies on the western edge of Porto Alegre in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, with the city built along its eastern shore and road and ferry links connecting the waterfront to the urban centre.

  • Waterfront access: Located directly beside Porto Alegre, the waterfront offers accessible promenades, public parks and frequent ferry and pleasure-boat movements across the water.
  • Estuarine connection: The site is an estuarine basin that links local rivers to the larger Lagoa dos Patos system, making it a working waterway for commercial and recreational traffic.
