Gresham Palace

The Gresham Palace is an Art Nouveau landmark on the Pest side of central Budapest, built for the Gresham Life Assurance Company in the early 20th century. It reopened in 2004 after an extensive restoration and now houses a luxury hotel and public areas.

The palace is noted for its richly ornamented façade, wrought-iron gates, and decorative stonework typical of the Art Nouveau period. Publicly accessible areas include the entrance halls and some ground-floor spaces that retain original decorative details and restored interior finishes.

Commissioned by the Gresham Life Assurance Company and completed in the first decade of the 1900s, the building served commercial and residential purposes before falling into disrepair in the mid-20th century. It underwent major restoration around 1998-2004 and was adapted for use as a hotel while preserving many original exterior and interior decorative elements.

Sited at the eastern end of the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, the building faces the Danube and sits within central Pest, close to major landmarks such as the Danube riverfront and the historic Royal Palace across the river.

• Access: Public access to most of the exterior and the ground-floor public areas is allowed, but the building operates as a luxury hotel so many interiors are private to guests.
• Best view: Best photographic viewpoints are from the Pest side of the Széchenyi Chain Bridge and from the riverbank, especially at dusk when the façade is illuminated.
