Grenoble-Bastille cable car

The Grenoble-Bastille cable car is an aerial tramway in Grenoble, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, linking the city center with the hilltop Bastille fortress; it first opened in 1934. It is an iconic piece of local transport and a common way to access the fortress and hilltop walkways.

A short glazed ascent delivers sweeping views across Grenoble, the Isère valley and the surrounding Alpine ranges. The ride takes only a few minutes and ends at the Bastille, where paths, terraces and viewpoints provide photo opportunities and city panoramas. The upper area is compact and easy to explore on foot.

The cable car was installed to connect the city to the 19th-century fortifications on the Bastille. Over time the system has been maintained and updated to continue serving both residents and tourists as access to the fortress and surrounding promenades.

The cable car departs from the lower station in central Grenoble and climbs to the Bastille on the hill overlooking the city. The site sits at the northern edge of Grenoble with views toward the Chartreuse and Belledonne ranges.

• Bastille viewpoint: Upper station sits at the 19th-century Bastille fortress and provides one of the best panoramic viewpoints over Grenoble and the surrounding Alps.
• The ride: The ride uses the town's distinctive bubble cabins known locally as Les Bulles and takes only a few minutes to climb from the city to the hilltop station.
