Grenada
Island Caribbean island nation producing nutmeg and spices
Grenada attracts spice tours (notably nutmeg and cocoa), beaches and rainforest hikes, plus scuba diving-including the Underwater Sculpture Park-and a bustling harbor town at St. George’s.
Grenada is an island country in the southeastern Caribbean consisting of the main island of Grenada and several smaller islands, with the capital at St. George’s. A key fact is that it is widely known as the “Spice Isle” because of its historic production of nutmeg and other spices.
The islands offer beaches, bays and coastal resorts such as Grand Anse, inland rainforests and small-scale agriculture, including spice plantations. Marine attractions include coral reefs and the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park, which draws snorkellers and divers.
The islands were colonised by the French and later the British; Grenada became an independent state within the Commonwealth in 1974. Its economy has long included agriculture, tourism and offshore services.
Grenada lies in the southeastern Caribbean Sea, north of Trinidad and Tobago and south of Grenadines island groups. The capital and main port, St. George’s, is on the island’s southwestern coast and serves as the primary entry point for visitors.
- Composition and nickname: Composed of the main island of Grenada plus smaller islands including Carriacou and Petite Martinique, and commonly called the "Spice Isle" for its historic nutmeg and cinnamon production.
- Independence: Gained independence from the United Kingdom on 7 March 1974 and uses St. George's as its capital and main port.
- Notable attraction: The Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park is a notable snorkelling and dive attraction located off the island's west coast.
What to See #
- St. George's: Capital city and main port located on the southwestern coast of the main island, known for its horseshoe harbour and Georgian-style architecture.
- Grand Anse Beach: A long, sandy beach on the western side of the main island that is one of the country's best-known seaside resorts for swimming and resorts.
- Carriacou: A small island to the north of Grenada with its own settlements and annual regatta traditions; administered together with Grenada.
