Greater Tunb Island
Island Strategically located Persian Gulf island, subject to dispute
A heavily controlled island in the northern Persian Gulf, Greater Tunb is administered by Iran and claimed by the UAE; access is restricted and it lacks public tourist facilities or regular visitor services.
Greater Tunb is an island in the southern Persian Gulf administered by Iran as part of Hormozgan province and claimed by the United Arab Emirates. It is the largest of the Tunb islands.
The island is occupied by Iranian military and administrative personnel and does not offer civilian visitor facilities. Public tourism and overnight visits are generally not permitted.
Control of the island became a point of contention after the British withdrawal from the Gulf in 1971; Iran has administered the island since that period while the UAE continues to assert a claim.
Situated in the southern Persian Gulf near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, the island lies among other small islets that mark the maritime boundary in the area.
- Access restrictions: access to the island is controlled and the presence of military and administrative personnel means it is not open for general tourism.
- Sovereignty dispute: administration by Iran is disputed by the United Arab Emirates, which also asserts a claim to the island.
