Greater Chimgan is a mountain massif in the western Tien Shan of Uzbekistan, noted for alpine scenery and outdoor recreation; its main summit rises to about 3,300 metres. It serves as one of the country’s principal mountain resort areas.
Hiking routes, alpine meadows and seasonal ski runs draw visitors for day trips and multi-day excursions; the area also has chairlifts and resort facilities that support winter sports and summer trekking. Trails range from short walks around the valley to longer ascents toward the summit and surrounding ridges.
The resort infrastructure and trail network expanded during the 20th century to support both local visitors and tourists from Tashkent. The area has been used for recreation throughout the Soviet period and afterwards, with incremental development of lifts and mountain lodges.
The massif sits in the western Tien Shan range, roughly east-northeast of Tashkent, with the village and resort cluster at the base serving as the usual access point for climbs and day trips.
- Seasons: Best season for visitors is summer for hiking and wildflowers, while winter offers skiing on prepared slopes at higher elevations.
- Altitude note: The main summit reaches about 3,300 metres, so altitude and weather can change rapidly; allow time to acclimatize and pack layered clothing.
