The Great Synagogue of Rome (Tempio Maggiore di Roma) is the principal synagogue of Rome’s Jewish community, located on the Lungotevere in the historic Jewish Quarter. It is a prominent and architecturally distinct building with a large central dome.
Construction took place in the early 20th century, with the building completed in the first decade of the 1900s. The synagogue replaced earlier, smaller facilities that had served the community within the old ghetto.
The interior combines elements of different styles common to large European synagogues of the period, and the building serves as the centre for religious services and communal events for Rome’s Jewish population.
The synagogue is located next to the Tiber River and within walking distance of other Jewish Quarter streets and memorials.
