Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is a federally managed wetland sanctuary in Morris County, New Jersey, protecting a large freshwater swamp near Morristown. Established in 1960, it preserves roughly 7,700 acres of wetlands and adjacent uplands.

The refuge contains a network of trails and boardwalks that allow close viewing of marshes, open water, and woodlands. It is important for migratory and resident birds and supports mammals such as beavers and white-tailed deer; typical activities are birdwatching, hiking, and environmental education programs.

The refuge was created after a late-1950s campaign by local residents and conservationists to prevent conversion of the swamp to an airport; federal acquisition and designation followed in 1960. Since then it has been managed to protect wetland habitats and provide wildlife-oriented public use.

Geographically the refuge sits in central Morris County, near communities such as Basking Ridge and Chatham, and is roughly 25 miles west of New York City. The landscape is predominantly swamp and forest bisected by streams and shallow ponds.

  • Best time to visit: Spring and fall migrations produce the highest bird diversity, including many waterfowl and warblers.
  • Access and conditions: Much of the refuge is wetland; wear waterproof footwear and expect seasonal flooding on low trails.
