Great Strahov Stadium
Stadium Enormous Prague stadium formerly used for mass gymnastics
Strahov Stadium in Prague once accommodated mass Sokol gatherings and enormous crowds; today its vast terraces, training pitches and surrounding monastery complex attract photographers, history-minded visitors and locals using the open spaces.
The Great Strahov Stadium in Prague is a large terrace stadium and former mass-event venue located on the Strahov Hill above the city. Built and expanded in the 20th century, it was designed to host mass gymnastics displays, public ceremonies and sporting events on a monumental scale.
At its height the stadium accommodated extraordinarily large crowds for choreographed Sokol and national displays, with terraces covering a very large footprint rather than a conventional seated bowl. In recent decades much of the stadium has been cleared of regular large-scale public use and parts of the site have been repurposed or left as open terraces.
The stadium complex forms part of the Strahov sports and cultural precinct and lies above Prague’s historic centre, offering broad views of the city and Prague Castle from its elevated terraces. Access is by road and by Prague’s public transport options that reach the Strahov area.
Originally developed in the interwar and mid-20th century periods for state and civic mass events, the site reflects the political and cultural history of large-scale public gymnastics in Czechoslovakia and later the Czech Republic. Changes in political context and public use have left the stadium largely dormant for its original purpose.
- Former capacity: Once claimed as one of the largest stadiums in the world, its original capacity for mass events was reported in the hundreds of thousands. Much of the structure is now unused or repurposed.
- Viewing point: Offers wide, elevated views across Prague from its terraces on the Strahov hillside, making it a notable vantage point even when large events are not held.
What to See #

- Complex grounds: Surrounding ancillary sports and training areas that formed part of the wider Strahov sports complex on the west side of Prague.
