Great Palace of Constantinople
Palace Byzantine imperial palace complex at historical Constantinople
Once the Byzantine imperial complex near Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome, the Great Palace of Constantinople survives mainly in archaeological fragments and floor mosaics displayed in Istanbul museums; visitors come for Byzantine history and nearby landmarks.
The Great Palace of Constantinople was the principal Byzantine imperial residence in Constantinople (now Istanbul), established after Constantine I refounded the city in the 4th century AD. It served as the administrative and ceremonial center of the Byzantine emperors for several centuries.
The palace complex was built and expanded by a succession of Byzantine emperors from the 4th century into the middle Byzantine period, serving as the main imperial residence and seat of government. It fell into disuse and was largely dismantled or destroyed after the Latin occupation and during Ottoman redevelopment; many decorative elements were removed during excavations in the 20th century.
The palace occupied the southeastern sector of historic Constantinople, immediately south of Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome in what is now Istanbul’s Sultanahmet quarter. The main visible finds and the mosaic museum are within walking distance of central Sultanahmet landmarks.
- State of the site: Many visible remains are foundations and fragments; large portions of the original palace plan lie beneath later Ottoman and modern-era buildings.
- Mosaics location: The greatest concentrations of surviving decorative floors are on display in the nearby museum rather than in situ at the palace ruins.
