The Great Mosque of Touba is the principal mosque and spiritual complex of the city of Touba in central-west Senegal. It is the religious centre and pilgrimage destination for the Mouride Sufi order and one of Senegal’s most important Islamic sites.
The mosque complex includes a large prayer hall, courtyards and the mausoleum of Sheikh Amadou Bamba, whose shrine attracts annual pilgrimages and regular devotional visits. The complex has been expanded and embellished across the 20th century to accommodate growing numbers of worshippers.
Touba and its mosque complex lie inland in the Diourbel region of Senegal and serve as both a religious and urban focal point for the Mouride community.

How to Get to Great Mosque of Touba #
The Great Mosque of Touba sits in Touba city centre. Touba lies inland from Dakar and is reached by road (roughly 190-220 km by highway depending on route); intercity buses and shared taxis run between Dakar and Touba along the national road network (N3 is the main corridor). In Touba the mosque is in the central quarter and is a short walk from the main bus/coach terminal.
Tips for Visiting Great Mosque of Touba #
- Avoid visiting during the Grand Magal pilgrimage and other major religious events - Touba becomes extremely crowded and accommodation/transport can be overwhelmed during those times.
- If you plan to visit the mosque compound, check local guidance ahead of time about visitor access and photography rules; the complex is a living religious centre and access to some areas can be restricted.
- Visit early in the morning when the complex is quieter to appreciate the architecture and avoid the busiest periods around the main prayer times.

For general visits, the dry season (November-March) is most comfortable; avoid the Grand Magal pilgrimage if you wish to avoid huge crowds.
